Here are the details of our new gravel tour for 2023. Starting in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada, we then work our way down to the Tabernas desert and then coastal tracks along the Almeria coastline before climbing back through the mountains to our base in Cádiar. We recommend fitting mountain bike gearing and a minimum of 40mm tyres or as near as you can get for a comfortable ride. Please enquire for advice on gearing options if you are not sure.
Arrive at Malaga airport for transfer to Cádiar, and build bikes. Dinner at the house.
Cádiar - Calahorra 82km
A fairly tough day climbing out from our base in Cádiar into the mountains around Puerto de la Ragua. Lunch will be on route in the mountains. Once we leave the Sierra Nevada mountains we drop to Calahorra for our first overnight stop.
Calahorra - Gor66km (option for extra loop)
We leave Calahorra, heading north across the flat high plains before climbing through an off-road pass that takes us through the mountains to our next stop in the pretty town of Gor with the option of an extra loop. Dinner at the accommodation.
Gor - Gergal 97km
After breakfast in Gor we have a long steady climb to the Calar Alto observatories passing nothing but the occasional farmhouse. Once up top, we have kms of stunning gravel tracks before eventually dropping down to our accommodation with a pool in Gergal. Dinner at the accommodation.
Gergal - Retamar 52km (option for extra loop)
An easy start this morning, but we soon drop into the Tabernas desert with some fairly tough sandy sections. When we hit the tarmac we have a nice run to our hotel on the beach. There is an option for more exploring the local beach trails if we have time in the afternoon, or you can just chill. Dinner at the hotel.
Retamar - Canjayar 81km
After a flat start along the coast, we start an amazing gravel climb from the center of Almeria city. We then carry on gaining height up the valley to our overnight stop. Dinner at the accommodation.
Canjayar - Cádiar64km
A mixture of gravel and tarmac today to get us back to our base in Cádiar with plenty of coffee stops on the way. Pack bikes up and have farewell dinner in town.
Transfer back to the airport.
